PURPOSE

 

This training program will prepare students for employment as professional drivers. It provides instruction in the modern methods and techniques used to develop safe driving habits, proper handling of equipment; customer relations; and other areas of instruction that will be an asset to the transportation industry.      

The purpose of this program is to prepare students for a Class “A” Commercial Driver License.This program focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the Commercial Vehicle Driving industry, planning, management, labor issues, community issues and health, safety, and environmental issues. The content includes but is not limited to the following: Loading and unloading cargo; reporting delays or accidents on the road; verifying load against shipping papers; and keeping records.

Reading 9,  Math 10, Language/Writing 9

 

Physical Requirements: 

Sit for an extended amount of time

Valid DOT medical Certificate

 

Tanker Endorsement

Class "A" License or Class"A" permit with Tanker Endorcment prior to first day of class

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

 

Vehicle Inspecion & Safety

Perform pre-trip inspections, identify vehicle components, practice defensive driving, and apply federal and state safety regulations.

 

Commercial Driving Skills

Develop behind-the-wheel experience through backing maneuvers, shifting, turning, parking, coupling and uncoupling trailers, and safe on-road driving.

 

Transportation Regulations

Learn hours-of-service requirements, cargo securement, trip planning, logbooks, and the laws and regulations governing commercial vehicle operations.

 

Professional Career Preparation

Build the knowledge, responsibility, communication, and employability skills needed to earn a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) and begin a career in the transportation industry.

  1. If you desire to test for a CDL license, you must first get your "A", "B", or "C" permit from the Dept. of Motor Vehicles. You can find the contact for your local office on the DMV Website  LINK https://www.dmv.com/


  2. You must also take the baseline driver's training called Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) LINK https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/commercial-drivers-license/entry-level-driver-training-eldt


  3. Before you test, your completion must be entered into the training registry by your trainer. For more information about the ELDT regulations and the Training Provider registry, visit https://tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov.


  4. Once you receive your permit and your training, then you must complete the CDL Third Party Packet (PDFfor FPTC testers, located on the top right side of this page, and provide the information to the FPTC Student Services Office as listed in the paperwork.
