PURPOSE


The Emergency Medical Technician program prepares students for employment as entry-level EMTs who provide basic pre-hospital emergency care for patients experiencing medical emergencies and traumatic injuries. Through classroom instruction, laboratory practice, clinical experience, and field training, students develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to assess patients, manage airways, control bleeding, treat shock, respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies, care for injuries, assist with emergency childbirth, safely move and transport patients, and use essential emergency medical equipment. The program also prepares students for Florida EMT certification and serves as the initial step toward advanced training as a paramedic.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN


Patient Assessment 
& Emergency Care

Develop the skills to assess patients, recognize medical and traumatic emergencies, prioritize treatment, and provide appropriate pre-hospital emergency care using established EMS protocols.

 

Airway Management
& Live Support

Learn to maintain airways, provide oxygen therapy, perform ventilation techniques, use automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and deliver life-saving basic life support interventions. 

 

Trauma & Medical
Emergency Response

Gain hands-on experience treating traumatic injuries, bleeding, shock, fractures, burns, environmental emergencies, cardiac events, respiratory distress, diabetic emergencies, poisonings, and other medical conditions. 

 

Communication
& Professional Practice

Develop professional communication, documentation, teamwork, ethical decision-making, and incident reporting skills while working effectively with patients, families, hospitals, and public safety agencies. 

 

Patient Care, 
Transport & Operations

Learn safe patient lifting, moving, packaging, and transportation techniques while operating as part of an emergency medical services team and maintaining patient safety throughout the continuum of care.

 

Clinical Experience
& Career Readiness

Apply classroom knowledge through laboratory, clinical, and field experiences while building the confidence, technical skills, and professionalism needed for Florida EMT certification and entry-level employment in emergency medical services.
